Women in Discipleship (sm) Devotionals for 2005
Week 23
Have you noticed that it is sometimes very hard to be joyful? There is so much wrong in the world that joy is often hard to come by. Then someone comes into your life, and before you know it, joy bursts on the scene. It's a wonderful blessing to be surrounded by people who are joyful. I wonder if we are people like that? I know some days I struggle to have the joy of the Lord.
Scripture to ponder: Ephesians 5:19 - "Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord."
The Apostle Paul taught the Ephesians that they could have a melody in their hearts. We can also. This comes about by having the Word of God stored in our hearts. Just yesterday I was reading Psalms 16 and 17, and a melody of joy filled my soul with strength and encouragement. God's Word does this for us.
Another thing I love to do is listen to Christian songs. What joy comes to my heart as I hear words in the music straight from the Word of God. We can speak out loud as a melody as well. I admit that occasionally I talk to myself, often in praise and thanksgiving to the Lord. God knows our hearts. If we desire to be a sweet fragrance, and speak either quietly in our hearts or audibly, then it is a melody to the Lord.
I pray that your heart will be filled with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs as you sing and make melody in your hearts to the Lord, this week and always!
