Weekly Devotionals 2006
Week Four
Dear Friends:
This is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not the truth. 1 John 1:5-6
We all enjoy receiving letters, e-mails, notes and cards. Encouragement is very well received. This passage begins to explain the exciting letter that John is writing to his Christian community. He is declaring to them the great news that God is Light! He explains that only in God does perfect life exist. John is very clear stating that in God no darkness exists. He goes a step farther and states that for us the same is true. No darkness is found in the redeemed heart of the believer.
What actually does all this mean? Exciting news comes for the person who has sincerely, humbly and willingly confessed the darkness of sin in their life, turned from it and then professed faith in Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death as payment in full for that old sin nature. This willing act of confession and turning delivers salvation to a true believer. The darkness of separation has been bridged by Jesus and His Light casts out the darkness in security of salvation for all time. (Remember dear ones this does not mean that we are now perfect. We still sin because we live in a fallen body. But the New Nature that Jesus imparts to us is that part in us that is holy. (See Galatians 2:20; Romans 6)
This is great news indeed and John is sharing it with us. John testifies to this powerful Light / Jesus truth!
The Lie that John is talking about has to do with people who profess a faith in Jesus but all that this reveals is words and not follow through faith.
Questions to ponder:
Is my faith a said faith or a "living faith?"
Confirm this by describing your Living Faith.
A Living faith lives in God's Light. As John states, a said faith alone is one that is a lie and darkness is its domain.
I pray that we each would walk in God's Light and live fully every day.
Blessings to each of you,
