Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have heard from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard. On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true Light is already shining. I John 2:7-8
The testimony John writes about is old! It is not new. It has been around since the Bible (Torah) had been written. When Jesus taught about the new commandment (John 13:34-35; 15:12) He was speaking publicly, personally, and passionately to the believers in Him that were in His midst. "Love God and love the brethren."
Isn't it true today? Love for God should permeate the flock of believers. Jesus practiced what the Old Testament commandment dictated. Jesus was a person who truly loved at all cost. To be able to say "Father forgive them for they know not what they do" takes love!
The Jews of Jesus day had a hard time practicing love for God and love for others. We see it in their words and actions. The prophets saw it and prophesied of their contempt to not honor God in caring for the widows and orphans.
The true light was shining when John wrote his letter. 5 decades had passed since Jesus was raised into glory. The prophecy of a suffering Savior had been fulfilled. The old commandment becomes New in believers hearts at salvation. The true light of Christ comes to abide in the believer and the former things are gone because the love of God is in the redeemed new heart of the believer. Love for others will flow from this new heart dear ones.
What about those of us who have been redeemed for a long time? New revelations of truth from God's word come to us as we grow in grace and study of His Word. This process reveals sin and helps us flee the old fleshly lusts and behold the Light of Christ more and more!
Questions to ponder:
How is this "shining" process developing in your life today?
Describe the contrast of the former life you lived and the New life you have in Jesus Christ.
We all have reason to rejoice because the Light of Christ is in us shining for the world to see. We praise His name.
Blessings to you all,
