Week 36

"They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world and the world listens to them. We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error."
1 John 4:5-6

Have you been around someone who speaks worldly? Some years ago I was subjected to worldly speaking during social gathers that my husband was obligated to attend. These times were difficult to take and I would have difficulty both in the events and afterward. Today while out shopping or just takings a walk I hear speech that is worldly and my heart aches at the hearing of it.

John is confirming yet again a contrast of ideas in this passage. Truth verses error. He speaks of true faith in the one true God verses the error of unholy doctrines.

Our words describe our character. I wonder some time how many professing Christians really know what is taught in Scripture and the meaning of "narrow road" living? When was the last time you heard a hard hitting sermon that truly addressed the meaning of Christ Like living? Many in John’s day were being tempted by the "wide road thinking."

It isn’t easy to keep to the "narrow path." (Matthew 7: 13-14) Jesus Himself tells us that only "few will find it." (v.14) That tells me to be watchful, hold the lamp steady (Psalm 119: 105) and keep to the narrow way in the Word of Truth the Whole truth. The Holy Spirit is our guide. We need not be afraid. We do need to shine forth Jesus! Those who will listen to the truth are the ones we need to share the Gospel with. We won’t know unless we speak forth God’s truth for today.

Questions to Ponder

1.  How have you been tested in speech today?
2.  What witness are you more like today…the spirit of truth or the spirit of error?
3.  How can the Word of God be your guide in the decisions you are making today?

The road may be narrow but dear ones it is filled with joy and blessing. (Psalm 119: 111-112) Enjoy the narrow way today, it is freedom!
