Weekly Devotionals 2006

Week 42

"By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love."   1 John 4: 17-18

Father and Son relationship is a very special one. For God the Father and God the Son (Jesus) we see a perfectly wonderful understanding relationship at work. This verse demonstrates it so well.

The perfect love here is God's love and the love of Jesus. The reconciliation of God and mankind was complete in the death payment of Jesus on the cross (because as He is). Jesus has reconciled us therefore we are in Him and are new creations in Him. (with us) We no longer need to fear punishment (judgement) from God the Father "because as He is, so also are we in this world."

The perfect love relationship Jesus has with His Father we also have now and forever. Jesus made this possible for all true believers.

We have "no fear of punishment" because Jesus bore it all! We now have clear access to the Father and to the Son. (Hebrews 4:16) If a person fears judgement this is a very strong indicator of an unregenerate condition. This person may needs to hear the good news of Jesus and make a true confession of faith!

Now we need to be careful to walk as Jesus did. When we mess up and sin enters in there will be discipline. The Father does this for our good. We need to respond with confession. (1 John 1:9)

Questions to Ponder:
Who do you know who might fear judgement?
What are you willing to do about this?
How is your relationship with the Father and His Son?

May our confidence in Christ give us boldness to confess and profess Christ in someone's life today.
Rejoice in the job of your salvation and freedom from the "judgement" that is coming.
Food for thought this week!
