Weekly Reading: Psalm 6

Depart from me, all you who do iniquity, For the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping.  - Psalm 6:8

Have you ever been in a place of grievous despair? David was. This Psalm of trouble, describes David’s helplessness, hopelessness, and defiant attitude toward his enemies.

 

David, it would appear, became physically touched by his anguish. When immense issues occur, the body, mind and spirit become affected. The pain he suffered came from the wickedness of others and resulted in David’s downcast spirit.

 

As David addresses his extreme pain in this persecution, he is not afraid to talk with God about his total weariness. He tells God that he is tired, and he profusely cries, especially when alone. His tone is weariness, because the affliction has gone on for so long. Does this sound like us sometimes? (v. 6-7)

 

Then, as we continue to read this Psalm, we see David take a turn toward God. He first addresses the enemies as a rebuke; then addresses God in a positive and healthy manner: “For the LORD, has heard the voice of my weeping. The LORD has heard my supplication, the LORD received my prayers” (v. 8-9). Notice David’s confidence!

 

What a powerful demonstration of faith! As we walk through our own valleys of despair, I pray that we, like David, will LOOK to the Lord who alone is our sure Strength and Defender!!
