Women In Discipleship
Weekly Devotionals for 2007 – The Psalms

May - Week 21
Weekly Reading:  Psalm 23

"The LORD is my Shepherd."   Psalm 23:1a

To many, this passage is the best known in the Old Testament.

David testifies in beautiful poetic script upon Whom he was totally confident! This
picturesque Psalm describes the Lord as a “disciple’s Shepherd-King-Host” (John MacArthur).

There are three distinct progressions that David uses to describe his LORD. Let us see if we can agree with him:

1. The LORD is my Shepherd. Would you agree with David here? David was a shepherd. He knew the requirements, responsibilities, liabilities, and rewards of this holy occupation. For a shepherd to keep his sheep there needed to be watchfulness, discipline, teachability and discipline. Now, would you agree?

2. I shall not want…I will fear no evil (v. 1b-5b). David expected God to be his Protector! The rod and staff were instruments useful to the Shepherd in protecting the sheep. David was expectant upon the LORD to rescue and care for him. Is the LORD your Shepherd today? How is He protecting you?

3. My cup runs over (v. 5-6). David walked with assurance, confidence, and hope. He received blessings, and we see his intimate fellowship with the good Shepherd as an out-flowing of those blessings. Do we see such blessings? Just look around – do you see them? Blessings abound if we just look. Let us take the time to look and acknowledge His blessings today.

May we be willing to allow our Good Shepherd to guide us in all things every day!

WHAT TRUTH DID GOD IMPRESS UPON MY HEART DURING THIS READING?
HOW CAN I BE OBEDIENT TO THIS TRUTH TODAY?
