Weekly Devotionals for 2007 – The Psalms
August - Week 35
"God looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God." Psalm 53:2
These Psalms are contemplative. David's historical references to events moved him to write poetic verse relating to a number of events. Either futile evil or triumph of righteousness…motivation to document his life experience in light of his spiritual reality was a strong motivation.
For insight into why Psalm 52 is so significant take time to read it along with this historical narrative as found in 1 Samuel 22:9,18,19. Saul and David were at opposite ends of God's justice, and Doeg, a chief shepherd for Saul, reported to Saul of David's whereabouts. Verse 7 gives the results of wicked men plotting against the righteousness of God.
In Psalm 53, we can refer back to Psalm 14 (see Devotional for March – Week Three). David is repeating, in spiritual insight, God's ultimate judgment for rejecters of righteousness. God as Elohim (deity, One True God), used 3 times in Psalm 14, is used 7 times here. A key to both is the accurate description of mankind. No one is good; all are corrupt; no one seeks God. This is significant to understand. Just as Paul stated (quoted this verse) in Romans 3:10-12, so today we need to understand the state of man without God. "The fool has said in his heart ‘there is no God’ .” The truth is that God is real!
May our hearts be encouraged because we know the One True God!
