Weekly Devotionals for 2007 – The Psalms
September - Week 37
"Cast your burden on the LORD and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved." Psalm 55:22
Last week we read Psalm 54 where David pleads before God on behalf of those evil ones who maligned him. This week we see David specifically speak of deep and heartfelt hurt by one of his very own. David was severely pained by someone very close to him. So much so, that fear, trembling, and horror had overwhelmed him (v.5). He wanted to fly far away from this treachery. David's plea to God was for true deliverance and death to the false and evil that had befallen him. He describes earlier times when all seemed well (v.12-14). David and this other person had times of worship and companionship. All things previous had now been destroyed. In verse 15-21, we see the evil heart being revealed in "the words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; His words were softer than oil yet they were drawn swords." (v.21). This friend was no friend! Evil was the intent. It's hard to believe that people are this way. David experienced this evil, and it is just as real in our day. As Christians, we are to live in the Light of the True Gospel. May we be true friends with one another. We can share with the Lord the hurts of life, and He will "sustain us every time!"
