Women In Discipleship
Weekly Devotionals for 2007 – The Psalms

September - Week 39
Weekly Reading:  Psalm 57 and 108:1-5
(Go to www.BibleGateway.com for complete text)

"Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me! For my soul trusts in You; and in the shadow of Your wings I will make my refuge, until these calamities have passed away."  Psalm 57:1

This Psalm follows Psalm 56 when David flees from the Philistines and Saul into a cave (1Samuel 22:1;2:3). David is fully distraught. His life is a mess. In its bizarre moments, David knows that only one relationship will calm him: God Himself. God is his Protection!

As we study David's Psalms, a continual pattern emerges over and over again. He pleads for God's mercy. He states the calamity. He pleads and praises God for His strength, protection, mercy, truth, and promises. Here we see it plainly. Verses 1-3 are praises and confidence verses. Verses 4-6 are the difficulty verses. Verses 7-11 (refer to Psalm 108:1-5) are the praise and hope verses.

Though David likened this present calamity to that of sharp toothed lions who have set traps for him, he still chooses to turn his fears into "faith in action". "My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise. Awake, my glory! (mind) Awake lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn" (v.7-8).

It's all about choices! David ran to God for shelter. May we likewise, and with confident faith, rejoice even in the bizarre happenings around us!

God is indeed faithful!
