During times of war David actively participated in battles. During one campaign (2 Samuel 8:13 and 1 Chronicles 18:12) David and his army fought the enemy in the North. A sudden, unexpected attack from a different foe in the South brought a defeat (if just for a brief season). It was in this setting that these Psalms appear to be penned.
Shock and confusion can come quickly when unexpected defeat appears from out of nowhere. David speaks forth to God these words: "You have shown Your people hard things; You have made us drink the wine of confusion." (verse 3 of Psalm 60)
There were, at this time, 3 enemies surrounding David's kingdom: Moab (v. 8b) (my wash pot), Edom (8b) (shoes) and Philistia who was arrogant. These enemies would all be put under God's control during David’s reign as king, but at this moment, David pleads for clarity and direction. "Give us help from trouble, for the help of man is useless." David knew that human wisdom and power would not stay his enemies. Only God could take care of the confusion facing him and his people. It's rather reassuring to see that the king of this nation ran to the One True God for his rule! It is only in this strength and wisdom that a nation, any nation, an individual, any individual, can thrive and be fruitful for righteousness!
May we run to God for clarity and direction only and always!
