WALK OF GRACE - My Spiritual Service of Worship
(Taken from the Walk of Grace Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)

September - Week 3:

In our service of worship to God, we are called to be intercessors for others.
In intercession, we yield our hearts to God for a purpose beyond ourselves and become useful to the Lord for good works. (2 Tim. 2:21)

Dick Eastman writes, "As intercessors we must go beyond the simple act of 'praying for others' to the point of manifesting a genuine spirit of concern for others. Consider the example of Christ. Before our Lord ascended to heaven for the purpose of interceding on our behalf (Romans 8:34), He first gave Himself to die on a lonely cross. Thus, intercession begins with a spirit of giving before it becomes a spirit of praying." (The Hour That Changes The World, p.79)

In Romans, Paul gave some encouraging insight into intercession on our behalf. From Romans 8:26-27,34, we see an amazing Prayer Partner of holy worth:
but the Spirit Himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered…because He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God…Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. (KJV)
The heart of prayer is love for God. Prayer comes from the desire to know God and love Him forever. Out of this love flows the two way communication of friendship and fellowship with God. As a believer draws closer to God, a deeper level of intimacy develops.
Our prayers can be simple or complex; that is not the issue. The issue is the heart! Together the Holy Spirit and Jesus see our hearts, hear our prayers, and intercede for us.

APPLICATION:
Jesus and the Holy Spirit are our greatest Intercessors before the Father.
  • In light of this great blessing on my behalf, how is my prayer life of intercession for others?
  • What new insights have I received through this thoughtful exercise in devotion?
