WALK OF GRACE - My Spiritual Service of Worship
(Taken from the Walk of Grace Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)

November - Week 2:

As we worship the Lord in today's devotional, let us come before Him with thanksgiving in our hearts.

Dick Eastman gives an explanation of thanksgiving as:

the act of expressing specific gratitude to God for blessings He has bestowed upon us…thanksgiving focuses on what God has specifically done for us. (The Hour That Changes the World, p.95)

God abundantly pours His blessings into our lives in both the physical and spiritual realms.
We have seen that thanksgiving flows from the believer's heart toward God for the blessings we have received.
However, God also wants us to give Him thanks in difficulties and unwelcome circumstances.

From Psalm 57, we can ponder the heart of David.
He had been hunted by Saul, but even in that situation, he chose not to focus on his difficulty but rather to place his hope and trust in the Lord.
From verses 1-4, David describes the distress of his situation and the adversary he faced:
The sons of men whose teeth are spears and arrows

Then in verses 5-11, David turns away from what he sees and hears to the Source of his strength.
Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Thy glory be above all the earth….My heart is fixed, O God; my heart is fixed:
I will sing and give praise. (v.5,7)

Even in extreme circumstances David knew that His God cared intimately for him.

We can be encouraged as well, because Jesus knows every detail of our lives, and He treasures the hearts of those who are devoted to Him.
Offering thanksgiving to God shows the gladness of a heart that hopes in Him, no matter what the circumstances.

APPLICATION:
  • What trial am I experiencing today?
  • How can I give thanks to God in it?
A heart of worship is one where even the worst of days can bring glory to the Father.
