TO BEAR HIS NAME - Weekly Insights into the Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)
ADONAI
Adonai (Adonay) is the Hebrew word for “Lord”. It is used by the people of Israel, and is their formal divine name for God.
The spelling of L(ord) is significant. Check out your Bible and see the spelling. If Lord is spelled differently, it is not Adonai, but another name for God. We will address that later in the year.
Adonay confirms the belief of God as Trinity, and signifies position and authority. It also signifies Sovereign Ruler, Almighty Master, and is a sign of respect!
Be gracious to me, O Lord (Adonai), for to You I cry all day long. Make glad the soul of Your servant, for to You, O Lord (Adonai), I lift up my soul. For You, Lord (Adonai), are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You. Psalm 86:3-5
Names such as Master, Lord, Ruler, Lawgiver, and Rewarder of mankind all refer to Adonai. Job declares:
And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord (Adonai), that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding. Job 28:28
A healthy fear of God (Adonai) is a very wise thing indeed!
APPLICATION:
As a Sovereign Ruler and Almighty Master how does this knowledge of God help me in my present circumstances? Realizing that the fear of Adonai is wisdom, what specific thing can I do today to stay away from evil and keep me clean for my Master? Sandra Davis, for the team at Women in Discipleship (sm)
