TO BEAR HIS NAME - Weekly Insights into the Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)
ADONAI
In Genesis, we see Abram calling out to the Lord (Adonai) GOD (Jehovah). He recognized “Adonai” meant Master, and knowing full well what it meant to be a master, he personally acknowledged that Adonay was his Master.
Abram said, ‘O Lord (Adonai) GOD, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? Genesis 15:2
From the book of Daniel comes a compelling story of true honor toward Adonai. Daniel was commanded to worship the adon (ruler) of Israel’s captivity. He refused, and instead, prayed to Adonai, Lord of Israel, Sovereign Ruler. His witness of the True Master, Ruler, and Judge of all is a testimony to his character and faith.
O Adonai, hear; O Adonai, forgive; O Adonai, harken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God… Daniel 9:19
Adonai is Lord exclusively, and the Hebrew nation recognized Him as Sovereign Authority and Ruler, alone worthy of all respect. To those who believe Adonai as Lord and Savior there is marvelous redemption and the promise of His return for us.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal lif in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
