TO BEAR HIS NAME -
Weekly Insights into the
Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)

Jehovah

Jehovah is the name for LORD. This name for God is the most sacred and supreme name given to our God.

When the King James Bible was written, the transcribers began to capitalize LORD to differentiate from Lord (Adonay). The transliteration in the Hebrew is Jehovah.

Of all God's names, Jehovah is the only name that is His personal name!
The others that we will see in our daily study will describe something about who He is.

Teach me Your way, O LORD (Jehovah);
I will walk in Your truth;
Unite my heart to fear Your name.
Psalm 86:11

The first account of Jehovah is compelling:

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in
the day that the LORD (Jehovah) God (Elohim) made earth and heaven.
Genesis 2:4

Here LORD God is actually Jehovah-Elohim, the personal God who is supreme, powerful and the One who is the Creator.

We will often see several names of God as He reveals His character through Scripture. These compound names of God reveal more of His amazing power and authority.

APPLICATION
:

  • How am I allowing the supreme God of the universe to teach me His ways?
  • Since Jehovah is the powerful Creator of earth and heaven, is what I am facing today too difficult for Him to handle?
  • Is my heart divided by what I see around me: wanting to fix things myself; and yet wanting God to help? How can I apply Psalm 86:11 to my situation?
