TO BEAR HIS NAME - Weekly Insights into the Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)
(El) Elyon
In January we looked at ADONAI, and saw how Adonai is our Sovereign Ruler and Almighty Master. He is Lord over all!!
In February we saw God’s name, JEHOVAH, and observed that He is Self-existent, Eternal, Righteous, Holy, and YHWH-I = AM WHO I AM.
In March we saw God’s name, ELOHIM, and saw that He is the Creator God who is actively involved in the world He made.
This month we will look at God’s name, El Elyon. This Hebrew adjective signifies the exaltedness, supremacy, and overwhelming majesty of deity.
El means God, and Elyon means sovereign, power, omnipotent, elevated, the Most High Supreme Being and the True God.
This compound name is used in both the Poetic and Prophetic Books of the Bible. El Elyon is God "Most High."
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High (El Elyon). He blessed him and said, ‘Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth…’ Genesis 14:18-19.
APPLICATION:
Oh Most Majestic and Powerful God, I come to You as a lowly and humble student: one who desires to Bear Your Name in my heart and life.
Help me this day to know You more dearly, follow You more nearly, and love You with all my body, mind, and heart.
Thank you for giving me Your Word, which breathes life to me and nourishes me completely. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
