TO BEAR HIS NAME - Weekly Insights into the Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)
(El) Elyon
The New Testament holds references to the Most High God. Written in Greek during the time of the Roman occupation, we see in the Gospel of Mark reference to the Most High God. The word in Greek, "hupsistos", is masculine singular, and means Supreme God. Mostly we see those in the demoniac realm referring to the Most High God. From Acts, we also receive a glimpse of where the Most High resides:
Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; and shouting with a loud voice, he said, 'What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?'
However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet says: 'HEAVEN IS MY THRONE, AND EARTH IS THE FOOTSTOOL OF MY FEET' Mark 5:7; Acts 7:48, 49a
Our God is God Most High, El Elyon, Supreme God, and the One True God. He is elevated far higher than human comprehension and wisdom, and is to be revered as the Divine, Supreme and Sovereign God of the Universe. The mystery and wonder of this is that He takes an interest in us, and desires to have an intimate relationship with us. How amazing!
Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father (God Most High) but through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.' John 14:6-7
APPLICATION:
- Have I been drawn by the Most High God of the universe to see that Jesus is the only way into a personal relationship with Him?
- If so, have I accepted His invitation? How does my life show this?
