TO BEAR HIS NAME - Weekly Insights into the Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)
EL ROI
There is a cornerstone passage in Scripture that describes to us the impact of El Roi. We are introduced to this God Name through the experience with Hagar, the Egyptian slave of Sarah and Abram.
In Hagar's most trying time of need, the God of the Hebrews revealed Himself to her in a dramatic way. These words are amazing to us because we "see" a God who recognizes every individual who is in need of His tender care!
Then she (Hagar) called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, 'You are a God who sees'; for she said, 'Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?' Genesis 16:13
The description for El Roi is: A GOD WHO SEES. This noun use for God's name reveals Himself as an All-seeing God to anyone who will call out to Him. El Roi sees the plight of our lives and is active in His desire to come to the aid of our present heartache. Scripture shows us that Hagar was treated badly by Sarah and Abram, yet God saw the situation and took action.
Behold, you are with child, and you will bear a son; and you shall call his name Ishmael, Because the LORD has given heed to your affliction. Genesis 16:11
He will do the same for us, when we call out to Him in our deepest need.
APPLICATION:
- What have I seen this past week that gives me encouragement that El Roi, the God who sees, is looking after my needs?
- Have I first listened to God, through His Word, before deciding to do something I think is God’s plan?
