TO BEAR HIS NAME - Weekly Insights into the Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)
El Shaddai
In the life of the patriarch Jacob, we see God Almighty working in a unique way. Like his grandfather and grandmother, he too would have a name change given to him by God. When reading Scripture, you will see many names of God. In Genesis 35:9-10, we see Elohim (of creation) speaking first. Then comes verse 11 where God Almighty, El Shaddai, speaks in harmony with Elohim.
Then God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddam-Aram, and He blessed him. God said to him, ‘Your name is Jacob; you shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.’ Thus He called him Israel. God also said to him, I am God Almighty (El Shaddai) be fruitful and multiply… Genesis 35:9-11a
Israel (Jacob) would have a hard life. During a time of severe drought, after the disappearance of his son Joseph, he sent his sons to Egypt for food. Later they returned home, and told Jacob that the Egyptian ruler (Joseph) was holding their brother, Simeon, hostage until they returned back to Egypt with their other brother, Benjamin. This grieved Israel, because He loved Benjamin and was afraid of losing him also. He shared with them a heartfelt farewell prayer to the God he loved and trusted. In his extreme distress, we learn of his dependence upon God Almighty:
Take your brother also, and arise, return to the man; and may God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved. Genesis 43:13-14
APPLICATION:
- Have I experienced a name change: from “sinner” to “saint”?
- As Jacob, Israel, put the safety of his children into the hands of his Almighty God, what problem do I have this week that I can place in God’s hands?
