TO BEAR HIS NAME -
Weekly Insights into the Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)
 
Jehovah-Rohi -- Week Four
LORD my Shepherd; the Great Shepherd
 
Last week we finished looking at Psalm 23 and learned that our Good Shepherd will supply everything we need: physically; spiritually; emotionally.

This week we conclude observing this name for God by reading Ecclesiastes 12:11-14:
 
The words of wise men are like goads (spike points) and masters
of these collections are like well-driven nails; they are given by
one Shepherd.

But beyond this, my son, be warned: the writing of many books is endless, and excessive devotion to books is wearying to the body.

The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.

For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.
 
John MacArthur speaks of the goads and well-driven nails:
 
Two shepherd’s tools are in view: one used to motivate reluctant
animals, the other to secure those who might otherwise wander
into dangerous territory.
 
 
APPLICATION:
  • What is one of the goads that God has used recently in my life to spur me on to fear (reverent respect) Him and keep His commandments?
  • How has my Good Shepherd secured me in Him, keeping me from dangerous decisions and relationships?
  • Do I spend more time reading books about God, than reading His Book, the Bible?
