TO BEAR HIS NAME
Weekly Insights into the Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)

JEHOVAH SHALOM - Week Two

Last week we began looking at this name for God which means “The LORD our Peace”. We briefly saw several Old Testament passages that spoke of physical safety.

This week we see a profound truth that extends to the eternal and what the world is striving to achieve: “Peace”

The Key to peace is God.

The people who walk in darkness will see a great light;
those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them ...
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us ;
and the government will rest on His shoulders;
and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace ...

In Judges 6:11-24, there is the account of Gideon who lived during the time of the oppression of the Midianites against the Israelites. Every time their crops were ready for harvest, the Midianites and their friends the Amalekites would come and devastate the land. The angel of the Lord came to Gideon and said:
The LORD is with you, O valiant warrior.

Gideon was living in fear, along with his family and nation. He did not feel like a “valiant warrior”. However God saw something in Gideon that Gideon did not see in himself.

Gideon went on and questioned the angel regarding all the terrible things that had befallen him and his people. He also recognized his frail position as a man in his community. But Gideon was obedient. He was still frightened, but by the power of the LORD, he completed the task given to him, and the LORD protected him.

Even before he did what the LORD required, he recognized that he had experienced the presence of the LORD and had not been destroyed. He identified the LORD as Jehovah Shalom – the LORD of Peace.

With that thought in mind, we also can experience Jehovah Shalom as we place our trust in Him to the salvation of our souls.

APPLICATION
:

  • What am I questioning in my life today?
  • What am I identifying as “frail” in myself, in which the LORD wants me to have a changed attitude?
