TO BEAR HIS NAME
Weekly Insights into the Names of God
(Taken from the To Bear HIs Name Study by Sandra J. Mikler Davis)

JEHOVAH SHALOM - Week Four

As we continue our look into this name for God, “The LORD of Peace”, we read in the New Testament about Elizabeth and Zacharias who were the parents of John the Baptist.

John the Baptist had been chosen by God to prepare the people for the coming of Messiah Jesus. In Luke 1:76-79, Zacharias prayed regarding his son:

... go on before the LORD to prepare His ways;
to give to His people the knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins,
because of the tender mercy of our God,
with which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,
to shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Jesus' mission on earth was not that of an earthly kingdom where He would rule as Lord.
Rather His mission was a spiritual one, and the peace He came to offer was one of reconciliation to the Father through the shedding of His blood on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins.

In John 16:33, Jesus stated:

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace.
In the world you have tribulation, but take courage;
I have overcome the world.

APPLICATION
:

  • As stated in Luke 1:76-79, have I experienced the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of my sins?
  • If so, have I taken time today to thank Him for His tender mercy to me?
  • What do I see today that is a "tribulation" in my life, and how can I apply
    John 16:33?
