Weekly Insights into the Names of God

JEHOVAH JIREH (Raah) - The LORD Who Provides - Week Two

The story of Abraham, Isaac, and the sacrifice takes on a powerful challenge and purpose for us as we grow and develop in our Christian faith.

Abraham was not asked to consider the sacrifice, but rather told to go and perform the sacrifice of Isaac. (Genesis 22:2).

He obeyed with a faith that almost takes your breath away. Listen to him speak to his servant:

Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there.
We will worship and then we will come back to you.
Genesis 22:5

Faith tested, and faith fulfilled. We see God call to Abraham from his faith experience and halt the sacrifice of his dear son Isaac.
God saw that Abraham had a pure heart and holy fear of the LORD. He responded to the LORD'S answer with a most magnificent response.

Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns.
He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering
instead of his son.
So Abraham called that place ‘The LORD Will Provide.’
And to this day it is said on the mountain of the LORD ‘It will be provided’.
Genesis 22:13-14

APPLICATION
:

  • What is my response to the Lord when asked to step out in faith in a particular area of my life, or that of someone close to me?
  • Abraham was tested and was faithful. How can I do likewise to the glory of God?
