WEEKLY DEVOTIONALS – 2011
The Bible – Absolute Truth – Week 22 So Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, 'All the words which the LORD has said we will do.'
Exodus 24:3
Have you ever wondered how the Bible became One Amazing Book? The Old Testament of 39 books, and the New Testament of 27 books make up the Holy Scripture. The Old Testament: Canon is the word used for Scripture. It means “measuring device or standard.” Many books have been written historically. However, only these 39 Old Testament Books are the Standard “inspired by God” Scripture. What is the Standard you may ask? Consider these points.
- Writing of Moses and Joshua were accepted immediately. (Refer to Exodus 24:3; Joshua 24:26)
- Authorship by recognized Prophets of God or leaders of Israel
- Writings with factual error or doctrinal error were eliminated from Canon
- Books quoted by Jesus or New Testament writers who referred to them as Scripture were accepted
- Jesus read from Old Testament writings:
These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. (Luke 24:44)
The Old Testament consists of Law, Prophets, Psalms (or writings)
THOUGHTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK
- Can you identify the 39 Books of the Old Testament?
- When you read "and God spoke", how does that affect your obedience
to the Word of God?
- What can you share of God’s Word with someone today?
