WEEKLY DEVOTIONALS – 2011
The Bible – Absolute Truth – Week 38 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2 Peter 2:1
England, in the year of 1553, was a difficult place to preach the Absolute Truth. Two men would die for their faith during this time of confused authority and unholy alliances. John Bradford was said to have preached the gospel faithfully. He sharply reproved sin, sincerely preached Christ crucified (grace and truth), pithily spoke against heresies and errors, and earnestly persuaded his people to live godly lives. (Foxes Book of Martyrs - p. 120) He would not recant his faith in Christ alone. He never wavered. John Leaf (age 20) would not recant of his belief that Christ alone forgives sins. He put his life in jeopardy for the truth of the Bible. He said, You call my opinion heresy. It is the true light of the Word of God. As he died (bound at the stake beside John Bradford) he cried: England, repent of your sins! Beware of idolatry. Beware of false antichrists. See that they don’t deceive you! (FBOM - p. 123).
THOUGHTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK
Bradford and Leaf could discern truth from error.
These men lived for Jesus and died PROCLAIMING that truth. Leaf, a man of 20 years, knew about repentance and lived it.
We are warned of sin, idolatry, and false teachers. Beware of deceptive teachings!!! These men carried Peter’s teaching into the 15th Century. We are called to continue the Truth and Grace Teaching into the 21 and 22 Centuries.
