WEEKLY DEVOTIONALS – 2011
The Bible – Absolute Truth – Week 39 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age ... Titus 2:11-12
During the mid 1600's, England was a seedbed for "selfish" that would rival the 21st Century. In addition, the persecution of Christians gained momentum with each new king or queen. When Charles I (1625-49) ruled, the persecution (including imprisonment and death) reached a high crescendo. The Puritans of the 1600's were large in number. They believed in a Covenant Relationship with God through the Person of Jesus Christ. This was their Creed - a rather awesome one indeed.
The persecution of the Puritans led to a mass exodus of over 20,000 people in a 16 year period. Pastor Thomas Hooker said it well:
Not what self will, but what the Lord will. Self is the great snare and the false christ. (Quote from the book The Light and the Glory by Peter Marshal and David Manuel)
As James sates so well:
Instead you ought to say, 'If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.' (James 4:15)
THOUGHTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK
Self is the destroyer of hope, peace, love and joy. Pursuing God is living in the Light of His Son Jesus Christ.
- Do you believe in God’s Covenant Relationship with you?
- Look up Hebrews 8:6; 9:15; and 12:24 and then respond.
- How can we be “Light Bearers” in our community today?
