WEEKLY DEVOTIONALS – 2011
The Bible – Absolute Truth – Week 40 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones. Psalm 116:15
The First Protestant Missionary to Korea arrived in that needy country in 1865. His name was Robert J. Thomas. Thomas took a job on an American trading ship, the “General Sherman”, as an interpreter for the crew. Though uninvited, because trading was forbidden, the ship sailed up the Taedong River. Along the way, Thomas tossed gospel tracts onto the river banks. Korean officials repeatedly ordered the boat to leave the country. Near Pyongyang, the ship was attacked with machetes and fire. Thomas leaped to shore with his Bibles - crying “Jesus, Jesus.” He would be beheaded for his actions. It is told that the Executioner did keep one Bible. He wallpapered his house with it. People would read it on his walls. Later a church was established and a nephew of the Executioner became a Pastor. (Paraphrased from The Voice of the Martyrs, 9/10). The year 1900: Pastor Ming - China - Boxer Rebellion While attending a conference, Ming got word that the Boxers had destroyed the railroad and communications back to his hometown of Tho-ting Fu. Many pastors and missionaries fled to Peking. Ming walked home to certain death. He continued to preach and to send Christians to safety. On June 29, 1900, the Boxers seized Ming, dragged him to their headquarters and proceeded to decapitate him. Their reason for his death: he was a notorious criminal. The crime: preaching the Gospel of Christ.
THOUGHTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK

- How is your genuine faith being challenged in your world today?
