Our God, Our Help in Ages Past

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations, before the mountains were born or you gave birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God. Psalm 90:1,2

This hymn was written when Watts was 20 years old. He had been dissatisfied over the church music of his day. His dad suggested he write songs suitable for worship. He would later write a Volume of psalters for all but 12 of the Psalms. Our God, Our Help in Ages Past is a paraphrase of Psalm 90. This song captures the awesomeness of our Creator God over His creation.

Our Shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home!

Under the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone, and our defense is sure.

Before the hills in order stood Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same.

A thousand ages in Thy sight are like and evening gone,
Short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun.
