The Sermon on the Mount – A Sermon Like No Other Week 15 – Righteousness and Scripture For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:20)
Jesus has a wonderful way (perfect actually) of getting His point across. The leading teachers of His day were dogmatic on keeping rules, always looking “holy” on the outside yet unclean completely on the inside. The only way anyone can be righteous is through the perfect righteousness of God that is imputed to the believer (Romans 4:5). Works righteousness is not true righteousness. This practice Jesus despised. He teaches this gathering of folks what true salvation requires. In the verses to come (21-48) Jesus will teach the truth of what true salvation looks like. Righteousness through the free gift of Jesus yields the kingdom of heaven. Truth 14: True righteousness comes only through Jesus!
Blessings to all,
