The Sermon on the Mount – A Sermon Like No Other Week 16 – Righteousness and Morality You have heard that the ancients were told, you shall not commit murder and whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court... (Matthew 5:21-22a)
This group of verses (5:21-6:18) explain to the crowd the truth of the commandments and their consequences. The first point Jesus addresses is murder. It’s a commandment and was to be taught thoroughly and correctly. Jesus wanted the people to know that murder was not just a physical act because of some violent behavior. Rather the very act of hatred in the heart yields murder and thus breaks the commandment. Jesus taught that reconciliation and forgiveness was essential in the life of a believer. Anger and hatred can only lead to moral decay and is not profitable to the kingdom of God. Truth 15: Anger and hatred are akin to murder. Beware and seek reconciliation as Jesus taught!
