The Sermon on the Mount – A Sermon Like No Other Week 17 – Righteousness and Morality You have heard that it was said; you shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matthew 5:27-28)
The second commandment Jesus addresses in this portion of the Sermon is adultery. (v.27-30). He makes it clear regarding what was truly meant in addressing this issue. In His explanation He speaks clearly and uses the eye and hand as examples. He isn’t advocating self mutilation but rather speaking in hyperbole to demonstrate a very serious point. It is the sin of lust and of wicked desires that turn a person from God. This sin can be devastating. Jesus tells the gathering that it would be better to lose body parts than to bear eternal consequences for this sin. Beware! Truth 16: Adultery is not just physical, it begins in the mind – and is sin!
