The Sermon on the Mount – A Sermon Like No Other Week 18 – Righteousness and Morality It was said, Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce; but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (Matthew 5:31-32)
The third commandment Jesus addresses is divorce. This subject is one that has had a lasting effect on many generations of people. In Jesus' day the divorce issue was abused by the rabbis and had literally been a way of escape for men in many ways. Women were unprotected. Divorce for any reason was tolerated. The divorce certificate given by Moses was a means to protect women. By Jesus' day, any excuse was acceptable. Jesus makes it clear that divorce was only acceptable in the case of adultery. He had a strong emphasis on marriage and desired for marriage to be held in high regard by all. Truth 17: Divorce affects the Christian witness. Marriage is sacred and should be respected and honored by all.
