The Sermon on the Mount – A Sermon Like No Other Week 19 – Righteousness and Morality Again, you have heard that the ancients were told You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord ... But let your statement be Yes, yes! Or no, no; anything beyond these is of evil. (Matthew 5:33, 37)
Oaths were used in Jesus' day as a way of convincing someone of their words. It had become everyday language to speak oaths. Today some use various slogans to convince someone that they are telling the truth (whether it is true or not). Jesus despised the casual use of such speech, especially since much of it was coming by way of the teachers and leaders of the day. Truthful speech should not need to be sworn by. Jesus emphasizes that as believers, all our speech should be truthful and honoring to God. Truth 18: A Christian’s character is dependent upon truthfulness.
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:18
Blessings to all,
