The Sermon on the Mount – A Sermon Like No Other Week 20 – Righteousness and Morality You have heard that it is said, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, do not resist an evil person, but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. (Matthew 5:38, 39)
Of all the lessons Jesus taught ... this one is truly humbling. The law was clearly set forth in Leviticus 24 and Deuteronomy 19. But here Jesus brings emphasis to the heart of issues that could impact everyone’s life. The issue is of personal rights. The law was designed to bring justice to folks when harmed. Jesus did not want the people to take issues into their own hands in retaliation. Jesus challenges the people to be free of the desire to hold on to anything tangible ... because it could become an idol. (See verse 40-42) Rather He teaches them and us to not hold on to your stuff even if it costs you dearly! God will provide ... trust in Him! Truth 19: Don’t hold to tightly to this worlds good. God provides for all our needs.
Blessings to all,
