The Sermon on the Mount – A Sermon Like No Other Week 27 – Righteousness and Human Relations Judge not, that you be not judged. Matthew 7:1 (Read Matthew 7:1-6)
Jesus was very careful to define judging. This passage is often used out of context and can be misinterpreted if not careful. There is a type of judging that is permitted. I say this with caution. Jesus is clear here to state that unfair judgments, censorious, hypocritical and self righteous judgment are forbidden. In order to do this Jesus clearly defines who we are to steer clear of ... those who are not of the brethren ... This is a key to the judging issue. There is a righteous type of judgment a Christian is supposed to exercise with careful discernment (see John 7:24). Take time to read this entire passage to see Jesus’ heart for this issue. Truth 26: For in the way you judge, you will be judged ... Matthew 7:2a
