 The Sermon on the Mount – A Sermon Like No Other Week 47 Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery. Luke 16:18 (See Matthew 5:31-39) This abbreviated account of divorce given by Jesus is recorded as a warning to the Pharisees. The issue of divorce is often seen as divisive and old fashioned. From the beginning of time God demonstrated the union of one man and one woman to be the “standard” for mankind. Things haven’t changed in 6000 years. Laws may come and go and the courts may rule but God’s design still outweighs all the others. It is valuable to know where God stands on this issue especially if someone is going to engage in the sacrament of marriage. As Christians we are cautioned, should stand firm and be faithful.
