A Faithful Witness - Week Sixteen Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. 1 Samuel 18:1 A man of many friends comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:29
True and lasting friendship is a gift from God. For Jonathan and David this friendship was costly and genuine. Jonathan was the heir to the kingdom of Israel, or so it seemed. David, however, was anointed and chosen by God to be the future king of Israel. Jonathan knew that God’s authority was supreme. This proved his Faithful Witness to his understanding of God. His friendship with David ran deep. Jonathan would die in battle honoring his father Saul who was the king. David would become king and in one act of true friendship David searched out any of Jonathan’s relatives to honor. In 2 Samuel 9:1-13 we see King David honor Mepheboshath (Jonathan’s son) as one of the kings own sons. Jonathan’s friendship with David was instrumental in David’s journey of faith. God gives us close friendships to encourage us in our faith journey. It is truly a gift of God to have a godly friend. May we appreciate this gift.
