A Faithful Witness - Week Twenty-Seven Then the LORD answered me and said, 'Record the vision and inscribe it on tablets that the one who reads it may run. For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; for it will certainly come, it will not delay. Behold, as for the proud one, his soul is not right within him; But the righteous will live by his faith.' Habakkuk 2:2,3,4
Habakkuk lived in a very troubling time. Foreign kings were invading and life was filled with uncertainty. His prophecy began with a prayerful cry for help (Hab. 1:2). In the plea he waited for God (Hab. 2:1). God answers Habakkuk’s complaint (Hab. 2:2-20). Habakkuk, as a faithful witness, recognizes God by saying: But the LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him. (Hab.2:20) Then He prays to the LORD again (Hab. 3:3-15) reminding God of past interventions. Finally in his conclusion he hears God and is utterly awed. In his overwhelmed state his faith shines triumphant because his focus is on "faith being worked out." Though the fig tree should not bloom, there be no fruit on the vine ... olive trees should not produce ... no cattle in the stalls ... Yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. The LORD GOD is my strength ... (Hab. 3:17-19). This is an inspiring example of a faithful witness! May our troubling times yield in us, faith like his!
