A Faithful Witness - Week Thirty-Three Now in those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand ... Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance; (v.8) ... As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I; and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Matthew 3:1,2,8,11
It is an amazing witness who goes out empty of worldly goods and proclaims “God’s kingdom is at hand.” John the Baptist was undoubtedly a faithful witness. Jesus’ own words speak of his character: I say to you among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. (Luke 7:28) The rest of the story ... John preached repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Luke 3:3) much like the Old Testament law required. John knew Jesus was the Messiah and His message of repentance and believing would be the saving Gospel message. (Mark 1:14) John’s faithful witness cost him his physical life. He did not bow to the false works teachings of his day. He trusted the Messiah and as a faithful witness was granted the reward of eternal life in Christ. May our legacy be the same!
