A Faithful Witness - Week Forty-one Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which translated in Greek is called Dorcas); this woman was abounding with deeds of kindness and charity which she continually did. Acts 9:36 She fell sick. (v.37b) So Peter arose and went with them ... when he arrived they brought him into the upper room; and all the widows stood around him, weeping and showing all the tunics and garments that Dorcas used to make while she was with them. Acts 9:39 ... and he gave her his hand and raised her up; and calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive. Acts 9:41
The faithful witness of a true disciple is always visible! The use of the word “disciple” here reveals the acknowledgment of a person who is a true follower of Jesus Christ. A Christian is to model the grace and truth of Jesus. Dorcas, we are told, was abounding with deeds of kindness and charity. These actions reveal a key to the outflow of Grace that Christ gives to all believers. The story doesn’t end there. We are then told of the “witnesses” to her kindness and charity. She embraced charity to the widows in her community. As James states clearly in his epistle: Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. (James 1:27) Dorcas was a faithful witness and the widows in her community knew she was a Christian witness! How do others see us?
