Weekly Devotional - Week 12

We live in a hostile world. The Christian community is often times the target of extreme persecution. Even in our own country we are seeing some troubling signs of persecution and hate! The times of the Bible were likewise troublesome and harsh. The Apostle Peter was well aware of extreme persecution. He writes:

Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. - 1 Peter 2:12

This word "honorable" is rich in meaning. The Greek word (Greek was the original language of the New Testament) implies the purest, highest kind of goodness. "Excellent" is another way to describe this word. Peter is teaching the Church here to remember the inward and private truths of the heart and soul. He speaks to them and us this way: Now as you live among unbelievers - shine forth the Biblical Truths you learned and live it out publicly. In Peter's day, extreme persecution and death were common. The Christian community lived publicly what they were taught privately. (Some of the most amazing testimonies of honor toward God can be found in such a book as Foxes Book of Martyrs.)
Help us Lord to live "honorable" lives for Your glory! Amen.
