Christian Character & Conduct - 2017 Weekly Devotional - Week 42
One of the proofs of Christian Character and Conduct is the ministry of "forgiveness." This character quality is most significant. The Lord teaches His disciples early in His ministry the power of "forgiving others." He states in Matthew 6:14-15, just after He offers the Lord's prayer model, these words: ... for if you forgive men their trespass, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses neither will your Father forgive your trespass.
Jesus is not referring to salvation in this passage. For those who have already received the free pardon, their justification is secure (see John 5:24, Romans 8:1). He is teaching here the need to daily confess sins in order to stay clean from the worldly dirt of sin. (1 John 1:9). It’s this forgiveness of others that Jesus is referring to. Who are you holding forgiveness from today? Be careful, because lack of forgiveness toward others can grow into bitterness and can spoil your witness. Forgiveness is healing. Christ teaches this. Help us Lord to be willing to forgive even the hard hurts in our lives. Amen.
From my heart to yours,
