Some of the most sorrowful words ever written are found in Psalm 22:1. ( See Matthew 27:35-46; John 19:23-24; Hebrews 2:12, 5:5). In a cry of anguish David utters these prophetic and grievous words: Psalm 22:1a My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Please consider the profound abandonment of Jesus at that specific moment. David was a type of Christ. His grief was real - not eternal. Jesus at His moment of utter abandonment was from the very realm of His Eternal Father's presence.
Quote from J. MacArthur: Christ at that moment was experiencing the abandonment and despair that resulted from the outpouring of divine wrath on Him (Jesus) as sin bearer. He did this for me... for you... oh what a Love, what a Savior...
