DAY FIVE
- Read 2 Kings 2:18-28, and explain what befell this family.
- Reread this passage. Describe the calm manner the Shunammite woman used in securing Elisha's help.
- What did Elisha see that Gehazi did not? (v.27)
- Read 2 Kings 4:29-37. What was Gehazi told to do?
What did the Shunammite woman do? What did Elisha do?
- From verses 32-35, describe what happened next.
- How did God answer this woman's request to Elisha? (vv.36-37)
Elisha raised a child from death just as his predecessor, Elijah, had. Elijah raised the Zarephath widow's son in 1 Kings 17:17-22. God gave power to these prophets to do incredible things. With God's authority they dispensed His blessings to those who were faithful and obedient.
- Read 2 Kings 8:1-6. How did Elisha later continue to help this family?
LESSONS AND APPLICATIONS
- God has the power to raise the dead. Do you believe in God and His power over life and death?
- God recognizes the faithfulness of His people. How has God honored your faithfulness to Him?
CONCLUSION
This week's study showed us the abundance of God's blessing and provision. Both Elijah and Elisha were used to bring help and hope to people who needed the touch of the Master's hand. We can see that God has a heart for women that brings about joy in the lives of many. God had a reason for placing these stories in this chronicle of history.
God reached down to the hearts of these women, and for two of them He brought new life to their sons. We saw how God provided for the widow of Zarephath and her son during a very difficult time when famine and drought took many lives. This widow was obedient even when it wasn't easy. God honored her faith by providing food for her and her son and by restoring the son's life. The widow with oil was given a special measure of God's best because of her faith when she obediently did as the prophet told her to do. The oil brought freedom for the sons and was used for them to live on during a season when their need was great. In the Shunammite woman, we see humility, devotion to God, and a desire to help God's man. She was given much because of her desire to do what was right in God's eyes.
God is our provider. He has given each of us His best in Jesus Christ our LORD. Like these women, we too have needs and experience times of famine and drought. God is available. He always desires to help us in our time of need. Have you spoken to Him about your present needs? He wants to help. Just call upon Him. (Heb. 4:14-16)
WELL DONE LADIES! MAY THE LORD ENCOURAGE YOU TO CONTINUE TO STUDY HIS WORD AND RECEIVE NEWNESS OF LIFE IN HIM EACH DAY.
