DAY TWO
- Read Matthew 1:18-25. From whose perspective was this story told?
- What do we learn from Matthew about Joseph's thoughts toward Mary? How do you think Joseph felt about Mary at this time?
In those days there were strict laws regarding sexual impurity among the Jews. Joseph was being extremely kind by wanting to divorce Mary quietly. The penalty for an act of infidelity was severe, and Joseph didn't want harm to come to Mary. He demonstrated love for her even in this. However, the angel had a different plan. He used prophecy to speak to Joseph, who was no doubt a man who took study of the law and prophets very seriously. He must have known the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14, which said a virgin would give birth to a son and would call him Emmanuel. Once the angel confirmed that all was well, Joseph took Mary home as his wife. They began married life, except for not consummating the union through the sexual relationship of oneness. That would have to wait until after the Messiah, Emmanuel, was born.
- Read Luke 2:1-20. Why were Joseph and Mary in Bethlehem, and under what circumstances was Jesus born?
- How did the shepherds hear about the birth of Jesus? How did they respond to the angels?
- What did the shepherds do with the news? (vv.17, 20)
- What did Mary do quietly and with much awe? (v.19)
Mary and Joseph each heard from the angel and did what the angel requested. They left their comfort zones and stepped out in faith to a world that was not very friendly or receptive to them. Some people wondered at their peculiar story or looked on them as impure and outcasts. Though others didn't understand, these two knew that God was at work. They had faith that God's promises were true and being fulfilled among them. What faith and humility they demonstrated! The world would never be the same.
The shepherds were the only ones to come and visit this amazing sight. They were enough for Mary and Joseph, who had received the blessing of caring for this Christ-child. The shepherds were a gift to them and confirmation that holiness had indeed entered time and space. Mary remembered the angel very well. She now pondered and treasured all that had taken place in the past nine months of her young life. Her heart was full!
