    DAY TWO

    1. Read Acts 9:37-42. What happened to kind, charitable Tabitha?

    2. Who do you suppose washed and tended to her body after her death? (v.37)

    3. Why were these people so grief stricken over Tabitha's death?

    4. What did they do in verse 38?

    5. How does faith fit into this story? (Heb. 11:1)

The believers in Tabitha's town had heard about Peter and his healing ministry and miracles. (Acts 9:32-35). Great news traveled quickly. Sharon and Lydda were only about ten miles away. The believers sought out Peter and entreated him to come quickly. The custom when someone died was a three day mourning period, then burial. The people wanted Peter to arrive before the burial. We are not sure whether they wanted Peter to bring them consolation, or if they hoped he could perform a miracle in bringing Tabitha back from the dead. In any case, they wanted Peter there as soon as possible.

    6. What did the widows impress upon Peter as soon as he arrived? (v.39)

    7. What did Peter instruct the people to do? What did he then do?

    8. After Tabitha was miraculously raised, what did Peter do and what happened next? (vv.41-42)

    9. What was the key action for Peter in this miracle? (v.40) Compare this with Luke 8:49-56.

The kindness Tabitha demonstrated toward the widows was no small task. For a widow with no family, poverty was a way of life. It wasn't uncommon for a woman of that day to have only one piece of clothing, two at the most. Tabitha's deeds of charity made a big difference in the lives of the people around her.

Read Acts 9:41 and note Luke's mention of saints and widows. Did you wonder why he pointed out widows but did not include them with the saints? I wonder if Tabitha had a ministry to needy unsaved widows? Maybe she was serving widows in active evangelism as a demonstration of her belief in Jesus as her Lord. In any case, God allowed this kind, charitable saint to get sick and die. God's plan was for her to be raised by Peter and to live as a witness of this miracle among these widows. With this miracle would come a harvest of new saints. Tabitha, I'm sure, was most astounded over such spectacular events.

    LESSONS AND APPLICATIONS

    1. Those who are truly loved in life will be deeply mourned in death. How will you be remembered after your death? What will be your legacy?

    2. God always has a plan for His people that is good and that yields the fruit of righteousness. Are you trusting in God's plan for you today even if you don't understand it?
